Being from the Deep South, I am a bourbon kind of girl! I love to cook with it and, yes, drink it!

Straight up, neat, mixed into a cocktail, or a simple bourbon and coke, bourbon is extremely versatile! I love coming up with new drinks or foods to make.

With summer approaching and berries truly coming into season, it’s got me reminiscing. Always around this time of year in the Delta, we would go out and pick dewberries. They grow wild on ditch banks! The trick was to beat the snakes to them because they liked them as much as we did! But down here in south Florida, we don’t have dewberries; but we can get really good blackberries this time of year!

Which lead me here! I always have a good bottle of bourbon on hand, we now have some really good blackberries, also a bit of our Homemade Sour Mix, and some of that gorgeous mint growing in my backyard. These ingredients were just begging to be made into a cocktail!

How to make a blackberry bourbon smash

Once you gather your components, this drink goes together in a couple of minutes. Muddle the blackberries and mint together. Add the bourbon and sour mix. Throw in some ice. Done!

If you want to rim you glass with sugar, run a slice of lime around the edge of the glass and dip in sugar. Make sure you do this step first!

Expert tips

  • If you don’t like chunks of blackberry and mint in your drink, muddle it in a cocktail shaker, add the bourbon and sour mix, shake, and strain into your glass!
  • Just in case you don’t have a cocktail shaker, use a jar with lid and a strainer.
  • If you want to rim your glass with sugar, do that first before you mix your drink!
  • If you don’t have fresh blackberries, frozen will work just fine.
  • The key to this drink is the bourbon. Go with a bourbon that has some vanilla to it. Stay away from anything with cinnamon or that it hot! It doesn’t work with this drink. (We used Woodford Reserve.)
