This Homemade Apple Pie Filling is super simple and easy to make! With the sweetness from the apples and the subtle hints of spice, there's no way not to love this classic.
8 Granny Smith Apples about 11 cups, peeled, cored, and chopped 1½ cups powdered sugar 6 Tablespoons all purpose flour 6 Tablespoons [boiled cider] 2½ teaspoons apple pie spice ½ teaspoon salt 1½ Tablespoons vanilla extract 3 Tablespoons salted butter
Peel, core, and chop apples.
Combine all ingredients into a large pot.
Cook over medium-low heat for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
When apples become slightly tender, turn off heat and allow to cool before use.
Substitutions:
You can use any kind of baking apple! We prefer granny smiths, but it's really about whatever you like best!
You can use store-bought or homemade boiled cider.
Vegan butter can be used in place of regular butter to make this recipe vegan!
Expert Tips:
Using a corer and peeler will make the prep a breeze! I highly recommend the one in the recipe card. I have used it for years and absolutely adore it!
Try to find apples that are firm to the touch and have no bruises. This will provide a great texture with no sour tasting apples in your filling.
Don't overcook the apples!
You can chop the apples as thick or thin as you prefer.
