Homemade Belgian Waffles

The ultimate breakfast treat! These Homemade Belgian Waffles are crunchy, lightly sweetened, fluffy, and SO much better than traditional waffles.

Ingredients

Waffles

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, separated
  • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • cups whole milk, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Waffles:

  • Heat waffle iron according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • In a medium bowl, beat egg whites to medium stiff peaks. Set aside.
  • Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar together in a medium bowl.
  • Add milk, egg yolks, melted butter, and vanilla.
  • Whisk until smooth.
  • Fold in egg whites.
  • Spray waffle iron with cooking spray, or brush with oil.
  • Ladle batter into waffle iron.
  • Cook to desired degree of doneness.

Notes

Substitutions:
  • To make this recipe vegan, you can use 2 ounces of aquafaba in place of the egg whites, as well as your favorite plant based milk and butter.
 
Expert Tips:
  • Be careful to not over-whip the egg whites! If they are over-whipped, they will dry out and not incorporate into the batter.
  • When folding the egg whites into the batter, be very gentle. You don't want to deflate them!
  • The amount of waffles this recipe makes/how long the cook time will be will vary depending on the size of your waffle iron.
