Buttermilk Sandwich Bread

Buttery, easy to make, and SO GOOD. This Buttermilk Sandwich Bread is the perfect compliment to all your favorite sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 2 ⅝ cups bread flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
  • cup sugar
  • 4 Tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  • Spray a 4 quart container with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • In a large glass bowl, combine flour, yeast, salt, and sugar.
  • Add butter, buttermilk, and egg,
  • Mix together and continue to work until ingredients are evenly distributed and you have a soft dough.
  • Place in prepared container. Cover.
  • Turn 4 times at 30 minute intervals.
  • Leave alone to rise until doubled in bulk.
  • While dough is rising, spray a 9-inch loaf pan with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Turn dough out onto a floured surface.
  • Form into an oblong shape.
  • Place in loaf pan.
  • Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, until done. (You may need to cover with foil after 15 minutes.)

Notes

  • When the bread is done, it should have a hollow sound when thumped.
  • Make sure that the melted butter is close to room temperature when you add it to the dough. If it's too hot, introducing it to the cooler ingredients might cause it to solidify.
  • The egg and buttermilk should be room temperature.
  • Don't skip turning the dough!
  • Make sure the yeast and salt are added to opposite sides of the bowl.
