Homemade Marinated Mozzarella
Herby, spicy, and absolutely delicious! This Homemade Marinated Mozzarella is so much better than anything you can buy, uses up all those fresh herbs in your garden, and is packed full of flavor. Fresh mozzarella slices layered with red pepper flakes, basil, thyme, oregano, freshly crushed garlic, and finished off with olive oil. Let it sit overnight (or just for a few hours!) and enjoy the best-ever marinated mozzarella! Serve with alongside charcuterie, as a topping for pizza, or just a snack. SO. GOOD.
About The Recipe
One of my favorite things on the planet is marinated mozzarella. Even as a kid, it was the one thing I would almost always eat. We used to buy it constantly! There was never enough in the house because even friends and family loved it.
But, one day, we couldn’t buy it anymore. So, we shopped around. We tried to find other substitutions, but nothing tasted as good as what we used to buy.
It wasn’t until a few days ago that I had an idea. We have a lot of herbs in the house, I need to use up some mozzarella.. Why not try making the one thing we all used to love?
And, to be totally honest, I was pretty skeptical about if this would work or not. My mom and I had tried making it once before when I was younger, but it just wasn’t as good.
Turns out, layering is the secret to getting the best flavor! Each bite of cheese is garlicky, herby, a little spicy, and just soooo good.
Equipment Needed
Ingredients
- Mozzarella
- Basil
- Oregano
- Thyme
- Garlic
- Red Pepper Flakes
- Salt
- Olive Oil
Instructions
This is so easy, I promise! In a large glass bowl, layer the mozzarella, red pepper flakes, garlic, salt, and herbs. Repeat the layers until no more cheese remains. Pour some olive oil over the top and seal! Keep in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. The longer you let it sit, the more flavor it will develop!
How To Sore
The best way to store this is to keep it in the refrigerator. But, keep in mind, the olive oil will solidify. It won’t effect the flavor or taste, I promise! Just set the jar out on the counter a few minutes before you need it to allow the olive oil to melt.
Substitutions
- You can use pearled mozzarella instead of slices.
- Fresh herbs are preferable due to the fresher flavor, but you can use dried. You will need to significantly scale the herb amounts back.
Expert Tips
- This recipe can easily be scaled to any amount you need.
- The longer the cheese sits with the marinade, the more flavor it will have.
- Make sure to try and evenly distribute each ingredient on each layer for the best flavor.
- The herbs will wilt and the olive oil will solidify but this doesn’t effect the flavor.
