About The Recipe

Oh, I’m so excited to be sharing this recipe! We are taking it back to my childhood today with these homemade Belgian Waffles. This was one of the very first recipes my mom taught me how to make when I was younger…mostly because she hated folding in the egg whites!

Ever since then, I have made these waffles for almost every holiday/occasion. I make them for my mom every Valentine’s, Mother’s Day, her birthday, etc.

It’s just something so special between the two of us.

Honestly, everyone in our family are waffle lovers (sorry, pancakes!). So, whenever I have an excuse to make these, I immediately run to the kitchen!

Though, these are no ordinary waffles. These Belgian Waffles are large, fluffy, with a perfectly crunchy crust, and a soft interior that’s perfectly sweetened.

Once you’ve had these, it’s hard to go back to regular waffles!

They decadent, special, and oh-so delicious.

What is a Belgian Waffle?

A Belgian Waffle, also known as a Brussels Waffle, is a light batter that has larger squares, deeper holes, and is typically a larger waffle. Originally, they were made with yeast! Nowadays, they are typically made with baking powder, just like our recipe.

So, What’s The Difference Between a Belgian Waffle vs a Waffle?

Well, there is actually quite a bit of difference! As stated above, you can see that the two are pretty vastly different.

A Belgian Waffle typically is a big larger/thicker than the traditional American waffle, as well as having folded egg whites in the batter to provide the light and fluffy texture.

Reasons You Will Love These Belgian Waffles

  • Crunchy exterior, soft and fluffy interior.
  • Larger than regular waffles!
  • Perfectly deep holes to hold jams, syrups, or butter.
  • Lightly sweetened to compliment any topping!
  • Easier to make than you might think and requires only pantry staples.

Equipment Needed

Ingredients

(Full ingredient amounts and instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post)

  • All-Purpose Flour – No need for any fancy flours for these waffles! All you need is regular and unbleached all-purpose flour.
  • Baking Powder – Provides the perfect lift to give these waffles a great texture.
  • Salt – Helps enhance flavors and cuts the sweetness from the sugar.
  • Granulated Sugar – Not only does this add sweetness, but also helps the texture of the waffles and helps them brown!
  • Large Eggs – You will need to separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. It’s best to use room temperature eggs, as it makes it easier to separate!
  • Unsalted Butter – We like to use melted unsalted butter to help control the amount of salt in this recipe.
  • Whole Milk – Make sure to get this out ahead of time to allow the milk to come to room temperature.
  • Vanilla Extract – A-must have! Everything is better with a splash of vanilla.

Expert Tips

  • Be careful to not over-whip the egg whites! If they are over-whipped, they will dry out and not incorporate into the batter.

  • The amount of waffles this recipe makes/how long the cook time will be will vary depending on the size of your waffle iron.
