It’s time to cross something off your fall to-do list: making apple oat muffins!
Every year when September comes around and the weather begins to cool down, we start craving Fall flavors. I’m pretty sure we’re not the only ones – many of our friends on our email list asked for some early fall recipes. 😉
We usually kickoff the start of the season with a big pot of apple cider or a slice of pumpkin bread, but this year…we wanted to change things up! Introducing our new seasonal fav: apple oatmeal crumble muffins. 🍎
Why We Love These Muffins:
- Tastes like dessert for breakfast: These muffins are a sweet indulgence that’s perfect for starting your day.
- Crave-worthy flavor: The fresh apples and apple pie spice combination creates a warm and cozy flavor.
- Hearty oatmeal base: The oatmeal provides a satisfying and wholesome foundation for the muffins.
- Easy to transport & share: These muffins are perfect for packing in lunchboxes or sharing with friends and family.
- Stay moist & soft for days: The muffins retain their moisture and softness, making them a great option for meal prep.
- Like apple coffee cake and apple crumble in 1: These muffins combine the best of both worlds, offering the flavors of apple coffee cake and apple crisp in a sweet breakfast muffin.

2 Parts To Apple Oatmeal Crumble Muffins
- Oat Muffins: Like our classic muffin base, this recipe uses a combination of granulated sugar and brown sugar to add sweetness and flavor. We also borrowed some inspo from our pumpkin muffins and used a combination of vegetable oil and buttermilk. This gives the muffins an irresistibly tender texture, as well as making them extra moist!
- Crumb Topping: You also need 5 ingredients for the crumb topping including oats, flour, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Be sure to make the crumb topping first so it’s ready to sprinkle on top of the batter. It’s almost the same crumb topping we use for our coffee cake muffins, just with oats added to it!
You’ll need 3 mixing bowls: 1 for the dry ingredients, 1 for the wet ingredients, and 1 for the crumb cake topping.

Making The Best Apple Oatmeal Muffins: A Quick Overview
While the full recipe card is below, I wanted to give you a quick walkthrough of the recipe so you’re prepared!
- Prepare crumb topping. Using a pastry blender is key!
- Prepare the muffin batter. Remember to whisk the dry and wet ingredients separately before using a rubber spatula to bring the ingredients together.
- Spoon batter into prepared muffin pan.
- Add crumb topping. Don’t add too much!
- Bake. Your kitchen will smell AMAZING!

What Are The Best Apples To Use For Apple Oat Muffins?
Well, for depth of flavor, it’s best to bake with a mix of tart and sweet apples. Though, it’s very important on which TYPE of apple you use. Firmer apples (also known as baking apples) are a must-use. Tart apples like Granny Smith and Braeburn are a great choice. You can even use sweet apples like Honeycrisp, Jazz, Pink Lady, or Fuji!
