About The Recipe

We’re ending the month with our first Fall recipe of the year and… trust me, it’s a good one! A classic, but oh-so delicious apple crisp. I mean, it’s finally apple season. What better way to start the season?!

Don’t get me wrong. I love summer and summer produce, but Fall is when my mom and I both thrive. There’s nothing better than crisp, cool air, turning leaves, and freshly picked apples.

And with September right around the corner, my mom and I are embracing this apple season with open arms. I know Fall is all about pumpkin.

Trust me, I get it. I love pumpkin, too. But…note quite yet. September is for sweet, flavorful apples.

Which, is what lead us to today’s recipe inspiration. We really just wanted to share something simple, flavorful, and easy to make. We wanted it to be something that’s tastes great, uses LOTS of apples, and could even be served as a Thanksgiving dessert.

Years ago, my mom and I shared an apple crumble recipe. It’s something we make every year and it’s always SO. GOOD.

Though, we realized we didn’t really have a lot of Fall-inspired crisps on the blog. We have a lot of summer fruit crisps, but no apple. I mean, we knew that had to be fixed ASAP!

We took our classic Apple Pie Filling recipe, tossed it into a casserole, and topped it with an extra thick and oh-so easy spiced brown sugar oat crisp.

This is the kind of dessert that takes minimal effort and comes together quickly! The hardest part? Waiting for it to bake!

Every bite is sweet, perfectly spiced, with just the right amount of crunch coming from the topping. It’ll always leave you wanting more!

What’s The Difference Between a Crisp, Crumble, and Cobbler?

While all of these desserts are very similar, there are some differences! When it comes to crisps and crumbles they are, essentially, the same thing. Baked fruit with a crunchy topping. A crisp tends to have oats in the topping while a crumble does not.

Then, there’s cobbler! Yet another delicious baked fruit dessert, but totally in a league of its own. Instead of a crunchy topping comprising of butter, brown sugar, oats, etc. It typically has a biscuit-like topping or pie crust!

How do you know when a crisp is done?

Baked fruit desserts such as crisps can be hard to tell when they’re perfectly baked. Though, luckily, this recipe tends to give us a visual cue! Once the topping is a golden brown and the filling/juices are bubbling up, the crisp is ready to be taken out of the oven. For us, that was at 1 hour and 30 minutes of bake time.

Can I add other fruit?

If you want to add other fruit to this recipe, go ahead! We love the mix of apples with blackberries or even rhuhbarb. Though, keep in mind, you may need to add a little bit more cornstarch.
