I love a good cookie. To me, there is nothing better than a freshly baked, right out of the oven cookie. Classics like chocolate chip and oatmeal get all of the love, but I do have a bit of a soft spot for cookies with unique twists or flavors. S’mores bars, stuffed peanut butter cookies, lemon crinkle cookies, even blueberry cheesecake cookies. All cookies are good cookies!

Though, I would be lying if I said that chocolate wasn’t my favorite. So, we’ve crafted the perfect chocolate cookie recipe to share with you (and…maybe a little bit for myself, too 🫣)!

What Makes These Double Chocolate Cookies So Delicious?

Don’t be fooled by the simple ingredients! They are surprisingly easy to make, yet deliver an intensely chocolaty flavor in every bite. The secret? Well, it’s something more simple thank you might think!

The Basics:

  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Baking Powder
  • Butter
  • Eggs

Extra Flavor:

The dough is just like any classic cookie. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Stir in the chocolate. Then, mix in the dry ingredients and finally add the chocolate chips!

Now, we bake! Yep. There’s no refrigeration needed for this recipe!

How Do You Know When Double Chocolate Chip Cookies Are Done?

Since these cookies are naturally dark due to the color, judging doneness by color alone can be tricky. Here’s a handy tip: give one a gentle tap on the edge with your finger. If the edge feels slightly firm but not completely hard, they’re ready! Don’t worry about the centers still appearing soft, that’s how they achieve that chewy, gooey goodness. Just be mindful, the cookies will be hot!

I used a 3 Tablespoon Scoop to make these cookies extra thick. If you use one smaller, the bake time will need to be adjusted. We found during testing and development that around 14 minutes for 6 large cookies was perfect!

Our Top Cookie Success Tips!

After writing, baking, and eating 100+ cookie recipes, we’ve learned all the top tips for baking the perfect cookie. Here are a few of our top tips:

  1. Don’t over-mix the cookie dough! Whipping too much air into the dough will change the texture of your cookies and could cause them to collapse as they bake.
  2. Temperature is KING. If you see one of our recipes that calls for room temperature eggs, butter, or any dairy ingredient, make sure you take the time to bring these ingredients to room temperature! We don’t just do that for fun, I promise. Room temperature ingredients emulsify much easier into a batter (or in this case, dough!).
  3. Use parchment paper or silicone baking mat. Coating your sheet pan with nonstick spray or butter leads to excess spread, as well as causing the bottoms to brown too fast/burn and creating a greasy bottom on each cookie!
  4. If you’re able, we recommend baking 1 batch of cookies at a time on the center rack!
  5. Never place cookie dough onto a hot baking sheet. When baking in batches, let the baking sheets cool to room temperature first.

Notes + Tips!

How to Store Your Double Chocolate Chip Cookies:
These cookies are best enjoyed fresh, but you can definitely store them in a few ways to enjoy them later!
Freezing the Dough for Later Baking:
This is a great way to have fresh-baked cookies whenever you want them! Prepare the cookie dough following the recipe instructions.
    • Portion and Freeze: Scoop the dough into balls of your desired size and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze the dough balls for at least 1 hour, or until solid. Transfer the frozen dough balls to a zip-top freezer bag or airtight container. Label the container with the date and bake according to the recipe instructions, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time since the dough is frozen.
Storing Baked Cookies:
  • Let your cookies cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Once cool, transfer them to an airtight container.
  • They’ll stay fresh and chewy for 3-5 days at room temperature.
Freezing Baked Cookies:
  • For longer storage, you can freeze your cookies! Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Place the wrapped cookies in a single layer in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag.
  • Frozen cookies will keep for up to 2-3 months.
Tip: When reheating frozen cookies, you can thaw them at room temperature for 1-2 hours, or pop them in the microwave for 10-15 seconds on low power, just until warmed through.

A Few Tips For The Ultimate Double Chocolate Chip Cookies:
  • Temperature Matters: For the chewiest cookies, make sure all your ingredients, especially the butter and eggs, are at room temperature. This is around 70℉ (21℃). Room temperature ingredients ensure they cream together properly, creating a richer and chewier texture.
  • Salted Butter? No Problem!: If you only have salted butter on hand, you can still use it in this recipe! Just be sure to reduce the amount of added salt to ⅓ teaspoon to avoid overly salty cookies.
  • Don’t Overbake: Since these cookies are dark in color, judging doneness by sight alone can be tricky. Use the gentle tap method described in the recipe to determine when they’re done. The edges should feel slightly firm but not completely hard, and the centers will still appear soft (that’s the chewy magic!).
  • Customize to Your Craving: Feel free to get creative with your add-ins! Chopped nuts, chopped dried fruit, or even a sprinkle of sea salt on top before baking can add delightful textural and flavor variations.

Who needs an over priced box store when you can make these right at home!!! Better than Crumbl cookies.

    1. Hi! I’m happy to hear you enjoyed these cookies! If the cookies crumble when eating, that’s probably due to over-baking. If you make them again, try baking them for 1-2 minutes less! Hope this helps. 😊 x, Caylie
