There’s something undeniably comforting about a big plate of French toast (or french toast casserole!). But we’re taking it up a notch and turning those delicious slices into bite-sized sticks for the perfect breakfast treat! It’s just like the ones we used to eat as kids, but so much better.

Imagine a subtle crunch from the exterior before giving way to a tender, cinnamon-soaked center. Each bite is better than the last! Especially when served with a generous helping of maple syrup. 😉

What’s The Best Bread To Use For French Toast?

Any thick sliced bread with a tender crust will work for this recipe. We have often made it with our Sourdough Hamburger Buns for a fun twist!

If you’re planning ahead, let the loaf go stale for about a day or so before making the French toast. Stale bread will absorb more of the egg mixture, just like it does in chocolate chip bread pudding and our cheesy breakfast casserole. Though, if you’re craving french toast sticks one morning (or even afternoon!), you still can make it! Just slice and use as-is. If you’d prefer, you can actually toast the sliced bread in a 350°F (176°C) oven for about 5 minutes (remember to turn the bread to allow each side to toast evenly!). This is a trick we use often! Especially during the holiday season with our cheesy mushroom stuffing.

You can use even use this egg custard to make regular-sized French toast, if you’d like! Though, with regular sized french toast, it’s definitely better to use stale bread. If you’re looking for homemade options, our readers have loved using our fig and walnut bread and homemade challah for French toast!

How Do I Make French Toast Sticks?

If you’ve made French toast before, you’re familiar with the process! It’s pretty straightforward, and it’d say it’s even easier than a batch of buttermilk pancakes or belgian waffles.

Slice your bread into 4 equal sized sticks (about 1 inch wide). Prepare your the custard by whisking together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, salt, and a dash of cinnamon. Dip bread into the custard, being sure each side is thoroughly coated (don’t over-soak!).

Place on hot griddle (or skillet) and cook, turning ¼ turn each time, until all 4 sides are golden and cooked through.

What Should I Serve With French Toast Sticks?

Fill your plate with as many French toast sticks as you wish! Then, finish them with a generous drizzle of maple syrup, a dusting of confectioners’ sugar, and/or your favorite fresh fruits and berries. You can even finish your stack with chantilly cream, strawberry jam, chocolate sauce or even homemade caramel sauce for an extra-special treat!

But if the French toast is enough sugar for you and you’re looking for more of a savory component, a plate of buttermilk biscuits and bacon, a slice of tomato and goat cheese tart, or a large scoop of ham and cheese casserole is exactly what you need.

Honestly, however you enjoy these french toast sticks, they will always be delicious. Just remember to save room for seconds!

Notes + Tips!

How to Store Leftover French Toast Sticks:

French toast sticks are best enjoyed fresh. However, if you do have leftovers, here’s how to store them:
  • Short-term storage: Cover leftover French toast sticks loosely with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for about 1-2 days. Reheat in a toaster oven or oven until crispy and warmed through.
  • Freezing: For longer storage, let the French toast sticks cool completely before placing them in an airtight container or freezer bag. They can be frozen for up to 2 months. To reheat, place frozen sticks on a baking sheet and warm in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes, or until heated through.
Note: The texture might change slightly after reheating, but they should still be delicious!

Tips for Perfect Cinnamon French Toast Sticks:

  • Bread choice matters: Slightly stale bread works best as it prevents the French toast sticks from becoming soggy. Thick-sliced bread also holds its shape better!
  • Don’t over-soak: Dip the bread sticks in the egg mixture quickly to prevent them from becoming too soggy.
  • Cook over medium heat: This ensures the outside gets crispy without the inside being undercooked and the exterior getting too dark/burnt.
  • Make ahead: Prepare the bread sticks and egg mixture in advance for a quicker breakfast on busy mornings!
  • Kid-friendly fun: Let kids help dip the bread or choose their favorite toppings.
