Your Fall Baking Will Never Be The Same!

This recipe is an absolute must-have during the Fall and Winter seasons. It’s something that, once you have it, you’ll never be able to go baking without it!

It’s a ridiculously simple recipe that my mom developed about 5 or 6 years ago. Every fall, she bought a bottle of boiled cider to cook with. But every year, it got more expensive. So, she decided to make her own. It took a few tries to get the timing right, but it was worth it. Now we have boiled cider whenever we want it for a fraction of the price, without having to wait for shipping or running into the dreaded “sold out”.

My mom and I look forward to making this boiled cider every season. It adds an irresistible apple flavor to treats like apple pie filling, apple cider donut holes, and even to cocktails like our apple cider bourbon fizz! This is our easy, cost-effective recipe that will elevate your holiday baking with its delicious, natural sweetness and tart apple notes.

Bonus? It makes your kitchen smell AMAZING!

5 Reasons You’ll Love This Boiled Apple Cider

  1. Just a little bit of this syrup and it is guaranteed to elevate the flavor of your favorite apple pie or even pumpkin butter!
  2. This recipe is SO versatile! It’s perfect for everything from drinks to a topping for ice cream.
  3. Made with one ingredient. Yep! Just one ingredient. It’s super easy AND cost-effective compared to purchasing pre-made.
  4. Vegan, gluten-free, and absolutely delicious!
  5. Can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to a 3 weeks.

Here’s The Only Ingredient You Need

  • Fresh Apple Cider – Not all ciders are created the same. Some are pre-spiced or have additives/preservatives. It’s essential for this recipe to check the ingredient label and make sure the only ingredient is “apple cider”!

Let’s Make This Boiled Apple Cider (In One Simple Step!)

Step 1: Pour into pot and simmer

Pour the cider into a large stock pot and place over high heat. Let the cider come to a rolling boil before lowering the heat to medium-low. Simmer until the cider has reduced significantly. Let cool.

How Do I Know When Boiled Cider Is Done?

Well, when you boil 1 gallon of fresh cider, it will reduce down to about 2 cups. For us, we found that this process takes about 1 1/2 hours. But, if you’re unsure of whether your cider is done, there is one trick you can do to know if it’s ready or not!

Consistency: Boiled cider has a similar consistency to honey or maple syrup. When the cider is hot, it will have a consistency similar to maple syrup or hot/runny honey. Once the cider is cooled, it will mimic the consistency of thick, room-temperature honey.

Don’t Be Afraid To Infuse Your Cider!

To make your boiled cider exactly what you’re looking for, infusing it with other flavors can do just the trick! Since this recipe is simmered on the stove for 1-2 hours, it creates the perfect opportunity to add a little extra flavor.

A few cinnamon sticks, a sliced vanilla bean, a splash of rum, or even some orange peels can all make your homemade boiled cider have that extra depth of flavor you’re looking for. Feeling adventurous? You can even combine different flavors to create one extra delicious syrup! Just be sure to strain out any additions before storing.

Notes + Tips!

How To Store:
Keep this boiled cider in a sealable jar and in the fridge. It’ll last for about a month or so. So, feel free to make it ahead of time and grab it whenever you need it!

Tips For Success:
  • Make sure you check the ingredients on your cider before you buy it. A cider that has been filtered or has preservatives will not work for this recipe.
  • The type of cider you buy will determine the flavor profile of your syrup. We don’t recommend single varietal ciders, but rather a cider blend!
  • When cooking the cider down, remember to keep it stirred! You don’t want a skin to form over it or for it to burn as it cooks.
  • Make sure you buy apple cider and not apple juice.
